fatigued-womanSo many of us suffer from fatigue these days as we try to keep up with life’s unyielding pace. Chances are you or someone you know has experienced the kind of fatigue brought on by mental and/or emotional stress.

We work longer hours because of stressed economies, which means less time with our family and friends. We worry about our communities and the world. Then there is the constant rush to get places, to acquire the latest gadgetry and, of course, to get ahead. It is all dizzying, discouraging and increasingly detrimental to a growing number of people’s health.

 

Overcoming fatigue can seem an insurmountable task.

 

Most people think their fatigue is caused by inadequate sleep and doing too much, and while those certainly can be factors, the energy drain from mental and emotional unrest is often overlooked when trying to deal with fatigue. And yet, our thoughts and emotions often are the greatest contributors to fatigue.

 

We begin each day with a certain amount of energy. If those energy reserves are continually spent in stress reactions, there will not be enough energy left to replenish our reserves or to maintain a healthy immune system. When our energy gets drained through stress on a regular basis, we are paving the way for fatigue and exhaustion.

 

As you see how stress is draining your energy, you can start changing how you do certain things and especially how you perceive what happens in your life.

 

It is important to keep in mind that the stress causing fatigue does not only result from those big stressful events such as loss of a loved one, financial crises, heated arguments, etc. Fatigue does not happen overnight. Like stress in general, it accumulates over time, as we so often try to push on, no matter what. Many times, fatigue actually comes from the accumulation of our emotional responses to the little hassles–the everyday, undetected frustrations, annoyances and irritations that drain us. A wise person once said,

It isn’t the mountains ahead that wear you out, it’s the grain of sand in your shoe.

Yes, it is the small stuff that often wears us out…frequently without our realizing it.

 

When you realize how your emotions are causing stress, you can begin to make some simple changes in the way you do things. You will notice an easing of fatigue. You will gain emotional balance, resulting in a more satisfying experience in day-to-day living.

 

Take immediate steps to calm down when are becoming emotional. Some suggestions are:

  • Take a walk

  • Practice deep breathing exercises
  • Develop a yoga or meditation practice
  • Regular physical exercise
